Heat Illness in Pets: Keep Them Cool and Safe This Summer

Summer can be tough on our pets. Recent veterinary reports show a rise in heat-related illnesses like dehydration and heatstroke among Canadian pets. Trupanion’s data (2020–2024) reveals nearly 2,500 pets treated for heat illness, with heatstroke incidents doubling during hotter months.

Why This Is Happening:

  • Hotter summers & more heatwaves
  • Long outdoor exposure
  • Vulnerable breeds with breathing challenges

How to prevent it:
  1. Test pavement before walks – Place your palm on the ground for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s unsafe for paws. Opt for early morning or evening walks on grass or shaded paths.
  2. Use cooling aids – Cooling mats, damp towels or even chilled bandanas around the neck help pets regulate temperature. For outdoor time, portable mist sprays can also be useful.
  3. Encourage hydration creatively – Not all pets drink enough water. Try ice cubes, flavored pet-safe broths, fountains that keep water moving or mixing water into food.
  4. Smart grooming and coat care – Regular brushing removes excess fur and helps with airflow. Avoid shaving double-coated breeds as their coat provides natural insulation.
  5. Recognize early warning signs – Heavy panting, drooling, slowing down or seeking shade can mean heat stress. Take a break immediately and move them to a cooler spot.
  6. Create a “cool zone” at home – Designate one room with AC or fans where pets can cool down. Outdoors, shaded spots, sprinklers or shallow pools are great for dogs.
  7. Plan travel wisely – On road trips, stop every 1–2 hours for shade and hydration. Carry portable bowls, water sprays and avoid leaving pets in cars even for a few minutes.
  8. Stay in touch with your vet – Use easy tools like chat, video call or teleconsultation if you’re unsure about symptoms. Quick guidance from your vet can prevent emergencies from escalating.

Keeping Pets Safe Through the Summer Heat
Heat illness is preventable. With small adjustments, your pet can enjoy summer safely. Keep them hydrated, cool and comfortable.
